Fun.'s "We Are Young," featuring Janelle Monae, tops the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart for a fifth week, just holding  off Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend," which bounds in at No. 2 with the second-highest-ever debut digital sales week.
"Boyfriend" opens atop the Digital Songs chart with 521,000 first-week downloads sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Since SoundScan began tracking digital sales (which first contributed to the Hot 100 the week of Feb. 12, 2005), only Flo Rida's "Right Round" has debuted on Digital Songs with a higher total (636,000, the week of Feb. 28, 2009).

Among newly-released songs by male soloists in the chart's 21-year history, only two have arrived with greater audience totals: Eminem's "Just Lose It" (52 million, Oct, 9, 2004) and Michael Jackson's "Black or White" (41 million, Nov. 23, 1991).

As previously reported, "Boyfriend" registered a history-making bow on the mainstream top 40-based Pop Songs radio airplay chart, launching with 3,961 first-week plays, the best first-week plays sum for a song by a male artist in the chart's almost 20-year archives.
With its No. 2 start, Bieber notches his highest Hot 100 placement. He had previously ranked as high as No. 5 when "Baby" debuted (and peaked) at No. 5 the week of Feb. 6, 2010. (He boasts one other Hot 100 top 10: "Never Say Never" (No. 8, 2011), featuring Jaden Smith.)

Despite the massive first-week numbers for "Boyfriend," fun.'s "We Are Young" leads the Hot 100 for a fifth week. The song slips 1-2 on Digital Songs with 363,000 downloads sold (down 6%). On Radio Songs, "Young" pushes 4-2 with 104 million audience impressions (up 19%), enough to give the song top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100 for a fifth consecutive week.
A notable factor in the chart battle between "Boyfriend" and "Young" is the latter song's upper hand in streaming. "Young" remains atop the On-Demand Songs chart with 1.18 million on-demand streams (flat from last week) in the chart's tracking week, according to BDS.
"Boyfriend," however, logs almost no streaming points among its Hot 100 points total due to its lack of availability on most streaming services during the tracking week, which ended Sunday. Also granting an edge to "Young," albeit slight, was the song's availability at all digital retailers, while "Boyfriend" was released as an iTunes-exclusive track.
Below the tightly-contested fight to the finish atop the Hot 100 this week, other action abounds.
Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know," featuring Kimbra, rises 4-3. The collaboration, which tops Alternative Songs for a seventh week, dips 2-3 on Digital Songs but with a 17% gain to 244,000 downloads sold. It advances 20-16 on Radio Songs (52 million, up 23%) and remains at No. 2 on On-Demand Songs (961,000, up 10%).
U.K. boy band the Wanted slips 3-4 on the Hot 100 with "Glad You Came." The song falls 3-8 on Digital Songs (169,000, down 8%) but continues its ascent on Radio Songs, where it climbs 6-4 (95 million, up 15%). On On-Demand Songs, "Glad" descends 3-4 but with a 3% uptick to 645,000.
Kelly Clarkson's former three-week No. 1 "Stronger" rounds out the Hot 100's top five, dropping 2-5. Nicki Minaj's "Starships" slides 5-6 and Flo Rida's "Wild Ones," featuring Sia, and Katy Perry's former leader "Part of Me" hold at Nos. 7 and 8, respectively.
Two pure pop acts, meanwhile, score Hot 100 top 10s in their first chart appearances.

A DAY IN THE LIFE: 1D Candid Photos of Harry & Co.

One Direction, the top tier's other British boy band phenomenon in addition to the Wanted, jumps 11-9 with "What Makes You Beautiful." The song rises 7-5 on Digital Songs (199,000, up 22%), 53-42 on Radio Songs (32 million, up 21%) and 15-11 on On-Demand Songs (476,000, up 22%).
At No. 10, Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" darts from No. 18 as the Hot 100's top Digital Gainer. The track roars 9-7 on Digital Songs (182,000, up 32%), debuts on Radio Songs at No. 73 (15 million, up 80%) and jumps 5-3 on On-Demand Songs (662,000, up 24%). The song's success is yet another sign of Bieber's influence, as, as previously reported, he has championed "Maybe" through various forms of social media.
"Maybe" recently spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100. This week, "Boyfriend" opens atop Bieber's home country's signature chart, marking his first Canadian Hot 100 No. 1.

DICK CLARK DEAD AT 82 'Massive Heart Attack'
EXCLUSIVEDick Clark -- famed TV producer and "New Year's Rockin' Eve" host -- died from a massive heart attack this morning ... TMZ has learned.
Clark's rep tells TMZ, the TV icon had been in St. John's hospital in L.A. after undergoing an outpatient procedure last night. Clark suffered the "massive" heart attack following the procedure. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Clark was 82.



Clark's health had been on the decline since he suffered a significant stroke in 2004 -- forcing him to retire from his hosting gig at "New Year's Rockin' Eve," which he created in 1972. Ryan Seacrest took over in 2006. Dick has appeared on the show sporadically ever since. His final appearance was in 2011.





Months before suffering a stroke, Clark told Larry King he also suffered from Type 2 diabetes.
Clark got his first big break in 1956, hosting what was called "Bob Horn's Bandstand" ... what would later be renamed "American Bandstand." Clark continued to host and produce "American Bandstand" until 1989.


Dick hosted Miss USA from 1989-1993 -- and Miss Universe 1990-1993.
In addition, Clark also hosted a bunch of game shows -- like "Pyramid," "Scattergories," "The Challengers," and many more.
Clark had been inducted into practically every hall of fame on the planet -- including the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame.
Clark had also received a total of 5 Emmy Awards for his work, as well as a Peabody Award. One Emmy was a lifetime achievement award.
Clark was married 3 times -- and has 3 children from his first two marriages. He is survived by his current wife Kari Wigton.

Mary Richardson Kennedy, the wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., died of asphyxiation by hanging, reports the Westchester County Medical Examiner's office.
Her body was found Wednesday in an outbuilding on the couple's property in Bedford, N.Y. The death has not been officially ruled a suicide, but sources told ABC News that Kennedy apparently killed herself. Her death marked the final event in a life that had turned tumultuous of late and adds yet another dark moment in the Kennedy family's history.Psychologists said events in Kennedy's recent history, such as reports of alcohol and drug abuse and psychiatric problems, pointed to an increased risk of suicide."When these things come to together in just the wrong way, they can really put someone at greater risk of suicide," said Dr. Ken Robbins, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin.Psychologists say problems with alcohol and drugs were one of the most common factors that increase a person's risk of suicide. Robbins said about 90 percent of people who commit suicide had a history of substance abuse and a record of psychiatric illness, usually depression."When it [depression] is combined with alcohol in particular, it increases the risk of suicide dramatically because of the disinhibiting effects of alcohol. It becomes much harder to talk yourself down from the suicidal thoughts," Robbins said.

Kennedy, 52, had four children with her husband, the son of Ethel Kennedy and Sen. Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968. Mary Richardson Kennedy and Robert Kennedy Jr. had been married for 16 years. In 2010, the New York Post reported that Mary Richardson Kennedy had been at the center of several disturbing episodes.In September 2007, the Westchester Journal News reported that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., worried about his wife's mental state, had tried to drive her to a psychologist's office. She resisted and ran from the car into the road, according to police reports.The couple filed for divorce in 2010, a day after police had been called to the couple's Bedford home in response to a "domestic incident" during which Mary Kennedy was allegedly intoxicated, according to the Westchester Journal News. She claimed that her husband had been verbally abusive to her and her children.Three days later, she was charged with driving under the influence after she ran the family's station wagon over a curb outside a school near their home, the newspaper reported.In August 2010, she was arrested again for driving under the influence of drugs, according to the Associated Press.It's difficult to tease out how Kennedy's relationship with her husband and the Kennedy family may have exacerbated her problems. The Kennedy clan is historically a close-knit group, united particularly by the series of tragedies that have haunted them, such as the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, Sen. Edward Kennedy's involvement in a car crash on the small island of Chappaquiddick that killed a young woman, and the deaths of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, in a plane crash in 1999.Strong social support is one factor that can reduce a person's risk suicide, even if they are facing a number of other stressors. But family violence or discord can do just the opposite, particularly if the person is struggling psychologically, psychologists say.

Aware-2, New Gigapixel Camera, Takes Photos 30 Times Better Than Current SLRs

An advanced camera powerful enough to shoot one billion pixels of still or video image is currently being tested at Duke University. Details of this research were released in the scientific journal Nature earlier this week.
This "supercamera," as Science Mag has labeled it, is actually composed of 98 smaller cameras that shoot at 14 megapixels and rest in a football-sized sphere. "Pixels are individual 'dots' of data," explains a press release for Duke's Pratt School of Engineering. "The higher the number of pixels, the better resolution of the image."
Pictures from the multiple cameras are then stitched together by image processing software on a computer connected to the sphere, creating one highly detailed image. According to the Wall Street Journal, these billion pixel shots generate photos with five times as much detail as what a person with 20/20 vision can see, and produce images 30 times better than the best SLR camera available on the market.
The Department of Defense has funded the research of this device, known formally as the Aware-2, in hopes of using this technology in both aerial and land surveillance, per The Wall Street Journal. The zooming-in capabilities of this camera's images (via supplemental computer software) could provide detailed information once impossible to obtain.
"When you’re in the field, you don’t have to decide what you’re going to study — you can capture as much information as possible and look at it for five years”, says roboticist Illah Nourbakhsh to Nature. He developed Gigapan, which is the software that stitches all of smaller images together.
Nature reports that there have been other gigapixel cameras developed, like the one housed at the University of Hawaii; but none boast a field of view 120 degrees wide and 50 degrees tall like the Aware-2.
If this technology was eventually spread to the general public, a whole new photography world could be created. PC Mag reports that by simply turning on the camera users would be able to collect comprehensive still and video images of the world around them. Media companies might also be able to shoot movies, television shows and sports in defined gigapixels, bringing forth a drastically new viewer experience.
"In many instances, the camera can capture images of things that photographers cannot see themselves but can then detect when the image is viewed later," says developer David Brady from the Pratt School of Engineering.
But it will be some time before this type of technology is available as a handheld camera. Currently, the Aware-2 weighs around 100 pounds and shoots only in black-and-white. The Wall Street Journal reports some industrial gigapixel cameras may be released on a "limited basis in 2013."

Aware-2 CameraThis device weighs around 100 pounds and consists of 98 smaller cameras at 14 megapixels each. As shown in this picture, the football-sized sphere is also surrounded by wires and a cooling system. Though Duke researchers hope to develop similar technology on a smaller scale soon, this version of the Aware-2 isn't quite ready for the general public.
